How to care for your dried lavender bundles

Wondering how to preserve dried lavender and keep it fragrant for months? Here are our best tips for storing dried lavender bundles, extending scent longevity, and getting the most from your organic lavender.
One of the most common questions we get at Whitethorne Lavender is: "How long will my dried lavender last?" The good news is that with proper care, dried lavender can stay beautiful and fragrant for one to three years — sometimes longer. The key is knowing how to store it and what to avoid. Here's how to keep your dried lavender looking and smelling its best all summer long and beyond.
Why Proper Storage Matters
Dried lavender is naturally long-lasting, but it's sensitive to a few environmental factors: humidity, direct sunlight, and heat. Summer in particular can be tough on dried botanicals if they're not stored thoughtfully. A little care goes a long way.
1. Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight
UV light fades the beautiful purple color of dried lavender over time. Display your bundles in a spot that gets indirect light — a shaded shelf, a bedroom corner, or a linen closet. If you're using lavender as home décor, rotate it occasionally to prevent uneven fading.
2. Avoid Humid Spaces
Humidity is the enemy of dried lavender. Avoid storing it in bathrooms, near kitchen sinks, or in basements. The ideal environment is cool, dry, and well-ventilated. A bedroom or living room is usually perfect.
3. Don't Crush the Buds
The fragrant essential oils in lavender are held in the tiny buds along the stem. Handle your bundles gently and avoid storing them in tight spaces where the buds can get crushed. If you're storing multiple bundles, lay them flat or hang them upright with plenty of breathing room.
4. Refresh the Scent
Over time, the scent of dried lavender will naturally fade. To refresh it, gently roll the stems between your palms — this releases the essential oils trapped in the buds and brings the fragrance back to life. You can also add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a sachet to extend its life.
5. Use Sachets for Drawers and Closets
One of the best ways to enjoy dried lavender all summer is to tuck sachets into your drawers, linen closets, and luggage. Our Organza Lavender Sachet Sets and Floral Lavender Sachet Sets are filled with our organically grown lavender and make it easy to add that calming scent anywhere in your home.
6. Display Bundles Upright or Hang Them
Dried lavender bundles look stunning displayed in a vase or hung upside down in a bundle. Hanging actually helps them maintain their shape and keeps the stems straight. Tie a ribbon around the stems and hang them from a hook, curtain rod, or ceiling beam for a rustic, fragrant display.
7. Pair with Other Lavender Products
For a full sensory experience at home, pair your dried bundles with complementary lavender products. Our Lavender + Sage Room and Linen Spray is perfect for refreshing a room, while our Calming Lavender Soy Wax Melts add a warm, cozy lavender ambiance on summer evenings.
